What is a NICU?
A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, commonly called a NICU, is a specialised hospital unit designed to care for newborn babies who require closer monitoring or advanced medical support.
The level of care provided depends on the baby's condition, gestational age and individual medical needs.
Why might a newborn need NICU care?
Some babies may require specialised care because they are born prematurely, have a low birth weight, experience breathing difficulties or need monitoring following certain complications.
The neonatal team evaluates each baby and determines the appropriate level of support.
What happens in the NICU?
Babies in the NICU may receive continuous monitoring of vital signs, respiratory support, nutritional support and other treatments depending on their condition.
The medical team closely observes the baby's progress and adjusts care as needed.
